Country star Daniel O’Donnell has never shied away from using his voice for good. But what started as a gesture of support for Relay For Life Donegal quickly became a mission close to his heart.

At first, Daniel joined as a patron simply to stand behind the Irish Cancer Society. But just a year later, life took an unexpected turn—his wife, Majella, was diagnosed with breast cancer. That moment changed everything.

“You really don’t know what’s around the corner,” Daniel shared.
“There’s always that fear cancer might return. It’s a reality so many live with—even now for Majella.”

Now, 12 years later, the couple remains deeply committed to the cause. Majella, named Global Hero of Hope, will officially join Daniel as co-patron of this year’s Relay For Life Donegal, held at the ATU Letterkenny campus on May 25–26, 2024.

🎶 As part of the event, Daniel will perform a free concert on Sunday, May 26 from 1:30PM to 3:00PM — a generous gift to the thousands who will gather in solidarity and support. No tickets, no barriers — just music, hope, and community.

Majella’s journey has inspired many. Back in 2013, she bravely shaved her head on live television to raise awareness, collecting over €550,000 overnight for cancer services.

“Majella understands this fight from all sides,” Daniel says. “And this event means the world to us both.”

🕯 One of the most emotional moments will be the Luminaria Ceremony, where thousands of candles line the track in memory of loved ones lost, those still fighting, and those who’ve survived.

“It’s impossible not to be moved,” Daniel said. “There’s sadness, yes—but above all, there’s incredible hope.”

Since its beginning in 2011, Relay For Life Donegal has raised over €1.67 million for the Irish Cancer Society. That funding provides vital services for cancer patients and their families, especially as 95% of the Society’s funding comes from public donations.

“We never know when we might need these services,” Daniel reminds us.
“That’s why your presence matters — to show support, give hope, and stand with those in need.”

🎗 Whether you walk in memory, stand in support, or come to be uplifted — this Relay is for everyone.
